Retailing | The retail news and analysis site ICv2 contends sales of graphic novels in the direct market may be better than recent numbers indicate because of the way Diamond Comic Distributors reports those figures. While the distributor’s calculations are based on the wholesale value of shipments, ICv2 based its estimates on the retail value, and found graphic novel sales rose 24.4 percent in March, rather than declined 5.7 percent (versus a year ago), and climbed 27.7 percent in April, rather than just 12.6 percent: “The big differences between the wholesale and retail rates of change in recent months appear to be caused by big increases in the number of graphic novels liquidated through Diamond in March and April. Fossil Q1 earnings up 4.2%, lowers 2012 guidance …

Fossil (NASDAQ:FOSL) said Tuesday that first-quarter earnings rose 4.2 percent, but it lowered its full-year outlook on a weakened European economy and slower-than-expected sales growth.
The company’s shares plunged almost 40 percent on the back of the news, trading at $79.20.
The company, founded in 1984 and with 10,500 employees, offers a line of watches under the brands like Fossil and Zodiac and through licensed brands such as Adidas, Diesel and DKNY.
For the 13-weeks ended March 31, Fossil reported a profit of $58.1 million, or 93 cents a share, up from $55.8 million, or 86 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 9.8 percent to $589.5 million, from 537.0 million in the year-ago quarter.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were earnings of 92 cents a share and revenues of $617.6 million.
“While our first quarter earnings were on target with our guidance, net sales came in slightly below our expectations,” said Fossil’s executive VP, CRO and treasurer Mike Kovar.
“We experienced a sequential quarter improvement in sales growth from our Asia Pacific wholesale business, continued strength
across our North American watch business and strong same store sales comps across our global retail base, especially when considering the strong double-digit comp performance in the prior fiscal year first quarter.”
Revenues in the company’s North American wholesale segment increased by 9.3 percent, or $19.2 million on a constant dollar basis, down from the 33.9 percent increase in the previous year quarter.
Fossil said the increase was due to sales volume gains in its watch and jewelry businesses, and was partially offset by a decline in eyewear sales.
Additionally, sales grew 9.3 percent in the U.S., and by more than 25 percent in Fossil’s Canadian and Mexican subsidiaries during the first quarter, for a total of $225 million, while shipments to third party distributors, primarily serving the South American market, increased 9.8 percent.
The Europe wholesale division saw a smaller increase in revenues of 4.7 percent to 152.9 million on higher watch sales and an
increase in the company’s leathers business, but Fossil reported that the higher sales were partially offset by a 12.3 percent, or $3.3 million, decrease in jewelry sales.
Revenues rose to $76.7 million in the quarter from $64.2 million a year earlier in Fossil’s Asia wholesale unit, as its online sales increased by 18.3 percent or $1.6 million for the quarter.
Gross profit margin dipped to 55.8 percent from 56.2 percent because of higher labour costs and negative foreign exchange rates.
Looking ahead to the second quarter of 2012, the company said it expects net sales to increase approximately 16 percent with constant dollar net sales increasing 19 percent.
For the full year, net sales are expected to increase approximately 16 percent, with constant dollar net sales increasing approximately 18 percent.
Fossil said it expects earnings per share to be in a range of 77 cents to 79 cents in the second quarter and in a range of $5.30 to $5.40 for the full fiscal year, down from its former estimate of $5.40 to $5.50 per share.
“While we are cautious about the European economy and its impact on our financial results, we remain confident that continued strength in watch sales, same store sales and square footage growth in our retail business, the continued rollout of concessions in Asia Pacific and the integration of Skagen Designs, the purchase of which was effective April 2, will result in double-digit sales and earnings growth for fiscal 2012,” concluded Kovar.

Um, yeah, big problem though… What kind of idiot pays anywhere near MSRP for trades? I never pay more than 70% and 50% is far more common.
